House on the Rock
Built on a 60ft tall rock in Dodgeville, Wisconsin the House on the Rock is a house like no other. The lengthy project of Alex Jordan Jr., its beginnings pay a sort of spite-ful homage to Frank Lloyd Wright. However, Jordan’s imagination ran a bit more eccentrically than Wright’s and what began as this:

(The livingrooms incorporate the stone as furniture elements. As well as a cave/lodge/groovy interior.)

Morphed into the following….. collections like no other. Not necessarily curated or with authentic provenance, there is just tons and tons of stuff. There are things like miniature ships:

elephants:

carousel horses (it boasts the world’s largest indoor carousel):

and dolls, lots and lots of dolls. There is carpeting everywhere, its dusty and dim. I remember going as a kid and can only hope someday I take the great mid-western roadtrip and make it back there again. Oh yeah, and pipe organs he really really liked pipe organs.
